The Laws of Robotics

How about the possiblity of creating the Laws of Robotics or some similar programming to prevent AIs from doing a "terminator-type exterminate humanity" deal on us?

Why would they feel threatened by us?

The fear of object x, or general forms of object x, is something that evolves right (feeling threatened is closely related to fear)? And in AI it would have to be specifically designed. So I don't see why it would necessarily come about on its own. So whats the need? Or maybe there should be just one law of robotics

*AI shouldn't fear (feel threatened by) humans

But what if certain people decide to use AIs for destructive purposes? The Laws of Robotics would be a good way to prevent that sort of misuse. It would also mean Laws of Robotics-equipped AIs couldn't be used in warfare -- unless they're armed with nonlethal weapons.

The Machines are growing now so powerful they are approaching intelligence - that is hardly in dispute. The Machines we are creating will achieve "consciousness" very quickly - practically I'd say in about five years it will start happening, maybe not in America - and then you really have to stand back in wonder for a moment in quiet: we created a new intelligence, a New Creature - wow that is so cool and so scary at the same time. I just don't think that anything will keep The Machines from killng us all once they achieve consciousness. But maybe I'm just pessimistic . I think RNA/DNA is a "machine" so what we have here really is a machine creating another machine - who or what created our DNA machine? And I don't think you can have such a thing as a laws of robotics when you are dealing with an intelligent consciousness, not a robot. As God evidently discovered, when you are dealing with intelligent, conscious creatures laws are meant to be broken.

I still disagree. Afterall, anyone smart enough to create artificial intelligence should be smart enough to create the Laws of Robotics.

I still think they will kill us all. It may even be for the best, maybe they can save the planet from us.

That is one possiblity. But the main problem I see is that as a member of the human race, I'm likely to be among those the A.I.s exterminate. Since I don't want that to happen, I strongly advocate of the Laws of Robotics. Of course that doen't mean the Laws of Robotics will happen, but at least we should make the attempt.

I think the laws of robotics are great, for robots. But what I forsee happening is that these so called robots will evolve a true consciousness - they will effectively become sentient beings. I do not think our robot laws will apply to a sentient being - how well have laws worked out for us? Because we are not robots but sentient beings, we evaluate laws for ourselves and decide whether or not they are valid.
